Like the fairy on top of a Christmas tree, Millie's life reaches the most wonderful summit that any couple could wish for.
In this extract, Millie recounts what she believes to be one of the most significant parts of her life - a Blessing of her and her partner's relationship, performed by a local priest and witnessed by all the families, clustered around the Christmas Tree. The priest, who also happened to be gay, wore a rainbow stole for this very special occasion, and after the exchange of rings, a jolly and celebratory champagne party ensued.
Millie found that, contrary to her expectations, the spiritual confirmation of their relationship made a great deal of difference 'in their heads' to both of them. They now felt that they belonged to each other and felt at peace for the first time. Despite the twenty-four-year age difference between her and her partner, the witness and blessing given by all their families, and most of all from Millie's sister, was the perfect endorsement of their life together.
In conclusion, Millie says that the legal rights of partners need to be addressed since the law, at that time, still didn't consider partners to be next-of-kin. Millie ends by saying that she envies the youth of today - but not their youth. What she actually envies is their freedom.
Born in North Wales in 1939, Millie lived alone with her mother and sister after her father left the family when she was still very young. Her mother remarried but Millie did not get on with her stepfather.
A while after leaving school, she trained to be a nurse, eventually being hired as a ship's nurse by the Union Castle Line, which travelled between Southampton and Cape Town.
Millie would later adopt a straight lifestyle when she migrated to Canada but returned to the UK in 1969. Millie rose with the nursing ranks eventually becoming a director of nursing in London during the 1980s. Moving into the private sector she ran several operating theatres at an exclusive hospital in London.
In 1975 Millie enjoyed her first proper relationship before having a shorter affair with another hospital matron. In the late 1990s she met her current partner and both received a blessing from a local priest at Christmas-time in front of all their family members.

‘Before Stonewall: An Oral History of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Community’ was a Heritage Lottery Funded project organised in 2003 by a Brighton-based organisation 'Gay and Lesbian Arts and Media', otherwise known as GLAM.
The project sought to record for posterity the first-hand recollections of gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender people from across the United Kingdom and beyond, of a time before the events in New York’s Greenwich Village which culminated in the Stonewall Riots of 1969. This was a time which was very different, and in many respects more oppressive for homosexual and transgender people, than the one we’re familiar with today.
This fascinating and important collection, recorded onto videotape, contains the testimonies, in the form of interviews, of over one-hundred individuals of varying ages, backgrounds and ethnicities from across the LGBT community. With recollections that reach back as far as the 1920s, what all of the interviews describe and reveal is the whole gamut of human experience, from the deeply tragic to the exhilaratingly joyous - all from the perspectives of a section of society that has often been considered to be ‘different from the others’.
Journalist Charlotte Cooper, who worked for the gay press at the time, co-ordinated the project’s video-recording with volunteers and conducted many of the interviews herself. Charlotte describes her time on the project as both a revelatory and profoundly moving experience.
Screen Archive South East has made available from across this collection a total of eighty four extracts from thirty individual interviews. Together they give an insightful and first-hand account of what life was like for LGBT people, both in the United Kingdom and abroad, and in both the years before Stonewall and after.
