What you eat is not who you are!
Eight year old Kathryn Windeatt has PKU (Phenylketonuria), a rare inherited liver condition. People with PKU cannot break down the amino acid phenylalanine, which helps to digest the proteins in food. This amino acid then builds up in their blood and brain, which can lead to brain damage.
The condition is found during routine newborn screenings, with around 1 in 10,000 babies born in the UK having PKU. Kathryn has to be very careful with her diet and eats very differently to her brothers. Kathryn's mum is thankful the food is on NHS Prescription as it could very quickly become very costly.
