The National British Transplant Games have been held in Exeter this weekend. The city of Exeter pipe band led the 400 competitors around the stadium, each representing a different transplant hospital from around the country. Exeter had its own contingent with a team of 13, all of whom had undergone kidney transplants at Wonford hospital.
Carl Whitaker underwent heart surgery three years ago and came second in the 100 meters with a time of 12 seconds. Janet Coleman from Belfast won the women's 100 meters. An athlete before her kidney transplant, she is happy her training is back on track.
The children have their own games. Emily Kid, aged seven from Liskeard, raises one of the loudest cheers. Young Heather Shram from Exmouth is interviewed about her medals, she has received gold for running 50 meters and silver for long jump.
Some of the winners will go on to represent Britain in the International Transplant Games. While the surgeons are proud to display their work in this way, they are worried about a continuing shortage of donors, a key message from the games is for more people to carry donor cards.
