Cornwall's deaf people appreciate community classes.
Often referred to as a third ear, lip reading goes beyond simply reading the lips of a speaker to decipher individual words; it encompasses movements, gestures and expressions. This lip reading class is being taught at the Cornwall Deaf Centre in Camborne, which opened on 5 April 1988.
Students have campaigned to raise funds for the classes to continue, as there are only three tutors holding 11 classes throughout the county. A student talks about the classes giving the group confidence, helping them beat the feeling of isolation. One tutor talks about the work being very rewarding. The fate of the course is decided in January by social services and the local health authority.
