Volunteering helpline aimed at farmers in need.
The National Farmers' Union (NFU) has been helping farmers since its conception in 1908. The South West is England's largest and most rural region, spanning the Cotswolds to the Isles of Scilly. It has nearly a quarter of the UK's agricultural holdings.
In a recent report the NFU has discovered farmers in the South West are under pressure, often facing stress and uncertainty, experiencing anxiety and clinical depression. It has been noted that three farmers a week in Britain are committing suicide, they are struggling to cope with quotas, high interest rates and isolation. The NFU say farm incomes fell by 35% last year.
Ten volunteers from farming families across the four counties have joined together to set up a telephone hotline, they have been trained by the Samaritans and hope they can help those affected by mental health issues.
