Actor and filmmaker Sir Richard Attenborough appeals for muscular dystrophy on this year's TSW Telethon production. Edward and Shaun suffer from Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD). Recently scientists have determined the cause; we now need to find the cure. Funding for research into this is key for future management of the disease, but there are many ways we can help change the lives of those living with the disease now.
DMD is triggered by a faulty gene which makes a protein called dystrophin. This protein helps support muscle growth, keeping them strong, and protecting them from injury. The disease is connected to chromosomes and is more common in boys. There is no cure for DMD, but certain therapies and medicines have been known to ease the symptoms.
