Movement is key for Charity Remap
Manadon Karate Club are training on an indoor basketball court raising money by doing 1000 push-ups, sit-ups, squat thrusts, punches and kicks all in five hours, although competitively they would like to see it done in two and a half. The money raised will go to the disabled charity Remap. Instructor Vance Harris discusses the charities aspirations, the clubs focus and personal fitness goals with TSW reporter Ruth Langsford. The charity Remap, is a UK charity which helps disabled people of all ages live more independently and has been going for over 50 years. Started by Pat Johnson an engineer with ICI, after he built a ramp and electric hoist for his sister, giving her a new level of independence which she was excited about, seeing how happy she was with these small adjustments to her living environment he wanted to do similar work to help others.
Remap officially stands for Rehabilitation Engineering Movement Advisory Panel. The charity designs and custom make equipment free of charge with help from skilled volunteers. In the early years Remap operated under the wing of the Royal Association for Disability and Rehabilitation (RADAR), but broke away in 1990 to become an independent charity. Remap covers the whole of the UK and completes 3500 projects every year helping disabled people to become more independent.
