A report published by the Somerset Health Authority sheds light on the unexpectedly high incidences of leukaemia cases in children and young people in a 12-kilometre radius around Hinkley Point nuclear power station, near Bridgewater in Somerset, between 1964 to 1973. There have been 14 cases instead of the expected four in children.
Between 1984 and 1986 higher rates of leukaemia have been found in adults, actually 61% higher than the national average. One unconfirmed theory is there could have been an undisclosed radiation leak. These findings have been submitted to the Hinkley C enquiry.
