Fit for Work Award
Cornwall County Council awarded for diversity within the workplace.
Cornwall County Council have been awarded the Fit for Work Award at a ceremony held in Truro, for its dedicated help to its disabled employees. Simon Weston was at the awards ceremony to congratulate the winners but also to remind people that those with disabilities need jobs for a normal life and although job prospects are picking up there is still a long way to go for equality within the workplace.
This is the second such award for Cornwall County Council; the authority has 1500 employees and 370 of them are disabled. Cornwall Council provide PPE and specialist equipment to those who need it, to help undertake their roles. They are looking into how they develop their polices for their disabled staff and how they can amend their training programmes so disabled people can be promoted within organisations.

By examining how the South West has adapted over time, we can reframe our perspectives and work towards a more inclusive future. From the establishment of disabled sport teams to discussing hidden and visible disabilities on regional TV, the region has made strides towards creating a more accessible and inclusive society. These archival videos can open our eyes to the experiences and perspectives of disabled people in the 1980s and 90s. There's still much work to be done, but by looking back at our history, we can learn from our successes and failures and strive towards a more equitable future.
