A look at archive film of schooldays including time in the classroom and school trips out.

School days fill our mind with happiness and nostalgic memories of happy days of yesteryears. We all go to school to learn things, but it's the other events that stay in our memories like the school play, trip, and sports day. The films revisited in this episode allow us to return to our school days with an intimacy which we often forget. These films also show the world of opportunity that awaits the children in them. Here, there is a record of children's journeys through their school years before they go out into the big, wide world.

A look at archive film of schooldays. The programme starts with a day in the life of Brampton Bierlow primary school, near Rotherham, shot by music teacher in the 1960s. There's a school trip from Barnsley to Manchester Airport where children see airplanes for the first time, and to York. And the 1950 May Queen from St Barnabas Primary School in Bradford remembers her big day. In part two a 1930s pageant, held at Oakwell Stadium in Barnsley, is recalled by an ex Barnsley Grammar school pupil. Also featured is a re-enactment of the Battle of Hastings and Stamford Bridge by the head teacher of Riccal Primary school and the Golden Jubilee celebrations of Rotherham Girls High school in 1959.
