A look at some of the ways in which our means of transport have changed over the past 100 years.
From the early days, filmmakers were interested in different transport and the look, speed, and freedom they gave to people. Aviation, railways, or a scenic Sunday drive, transport wasn't just a means of getting from A to B. In fact, motorsport began to gain popularity after the Second World War, and in the Sheffield Sporting Trials captured on film, 90% of the cars were homemade specially for the chase. It was important to maintain power without spinning the wheels, and the most effective way to do this was for the passenger to bounce up and down, creating a rather amusing scene for the event's spectators.
A look at some of the ways in which our means of transport have changed over the past 100 years. The programme features rare footage of the Sheffield Sporting trials and a look at pre-war aviation through the films of a flying enthusiast whose films of various air shows before the war captured commercial flying in its infancy. Also, in part one a reflection on the gentle joys of Sunday driving, as experienced by a York family who regularly updated their family car. In part two a day in the life of a Huddersfield trolleybus as seen through one of its former drivers and a look at the effect the Beeching cuts had on a number of branch lines in North Yorkshire.
