A look at the world of work including features on Newton Chambers Iron Works and Rowntree's.
Yorkshire sat at the heart of the industrial revolution in England, and many of those industries' working practices remained core to the county many years later, building Yorkshire's reputation for steel, coal, and even chocolate, as well communities intrinsically linked to these industries. Though now changed, modernized, and in some cases, largely disappeared, even today 'Made in Sheffield' remains a mark of quality known worldwide.
This episode takes a look at the world of work. It includes features on the vast Newton Chambers Iron works in Sheffield and shows a place where more than four thousand people worked and played. Also featured is a story of a Barnsley miner which chronicles the harsh life of the men underground in the years between the wars, as well as the annual sports day at Rowntrees and the life of a raw recruit at Hull's Nautical College.
