The fight for the right to work, part of the long fight against pit closures in the North West.
The North West People's March against unemployment and pit closures took place from 17th to 20th June 1993. It was a protest about the planned closure of Parkside Colliery in Newton-le-Willows, where 500 members of the National Union of Mineworkers were still employed. The campaign was intended to both mobilise support for these miners and forge links with other groups involved in political struggle in the region. This film shows the march, which comprised several separate sections setting off from different parts of the North West, on the move. The marchers all meet up at Parkside Colliery pit camp and are met by members of the Women Against Pit Closures group who have just completed their 11-day occupation of the pit. Here, a rally is held with speakers including NUM president Arthur Scargill and Sylvia Pye of Women Against Pit Closures.
