Keeping a sense of proportion - arguments for and against introducing proportional representation into the British electoral system.
Proportional representation - the idea that the number of seats held by political parties in parliament should be in proportion to the number of votes cast - has many supporters, but also opponents. In this short film, some of those in favour of introducing PR into the British electoral system set out their case for changing the way by which the British voters choose their government. One of their reasons is that PR could encourage more women and people with disabilities to stand for parliament, two groups traditionally underrepresented in Westminster. MP Gerald Kaufman puts the case for the opposition, making the argument that people understand and use the current system, so why tamper with it?
