Celebrating Honiton's history in unique style.
The annual hot pennies ceremony has taken place at Honiton. Here we see them heating the pennies in the oven before throwing them to the crowd. This tradition dates back to the 13th century, when upper classes would enjoy throwing hot pennies from the windows of the local pub to the peasants.
The proceedings are started by the town cryer, accompanied by the mayor and local dignitaries, hoisting up a garlanded pole with a gloved hand at the top and proclaiming that 'No man may be arrested so long as the glove is up'.
