TSW explores some of the South West's most notable artisans, including a potter, a carpenter, a weaver, and a blacksmith.
This programme, produced for TSW looks at some of the traditional artisan skills which have been largely forgotten in our modern era, and how we can use basic elements of earth, air, fire and water to create something from nothing. The film explores the years of training, dedication and passion that is required to keep the practices of pottery, weaving, carpentry and blacksmithing alive. The future of these skills is called into question as they are passed through the generations and subject to change and re-interpretation.
We meet Jason Wason, a potter from Cornwall, who throws clay into exquisite vases and bowls. Richard La Trobe Bateman, who fells his own trees to turn them into furniture, championing the use of knotted branches and other 'scraps' that would otherwise have been discarded. Jenny Cook, a weaver from Devon creates fine-art tapestries around human experiences, such as sleeping, being with nature and feeling emotions. Finally we are introduced to Jim Horrobin, a blacksmith who specialises in creating metalwork from nature, and although blacksmithing isn’t traditionally seen as a craft which came from nature, Horrobin tries to reconnect with these roots.
