Preserving Dartmoor's Cultural Heritage
Part two of A Dartmoor Evening features the dances that occur at the local venues in Gidleigh, Throwleigh and Chagford as well as the performances of the Kelly Quarry Blasters. Dave Wills provides humorous interludes to give his fellow band-members a break from singing.
In 2019 at the Manor Pavilion Theatre and Arts Centre in Sidmouth, Dartmoor at the Seaside was an event designed to keep the traditions alive that were showcased in this 1979 film. The show was a tribute to the Dartmoor folk musician, singer, step dancer and stroyteller Bob Cann. The show reflected the atmosphere of the documentary, with performers including Mark Bazely, Jason Rice and Rob Murch. Mark performed aged seven in the documentary, he is now a wonderful melodeon player and step dancer. Jason Rice is a champion Dartmoor step dancer. Both his grandfather Jack Rice and great Uncle Les Rice also featured in the documentary. Part of the original Quarry Blasters band who appeared in the documentary, Len and Dave, also performed with another member. Many more acts played preserving the Devonshire dialect and singing. This is a clear indication of the local want to preserve Dartmoor's cultural heritage through the generations.
