The Yorkshire Film Archive at York St John University save and celebrate screen heritage made in or about Yorkshire. They connect broad and diverse audiences to their cultural and socially significant collection that reflects the life, landscape, and identity of the people of the region since the 1890s. Together with their sister archive in the North East they form the Yorkshire and North East Film Archive, a unique pan-regional resource with over 75,000 moving image artefacts. They unlock the collections for artists, academics, curators, programmers, researchers, and producers to reveal compelling stories from the vaults. www.yfanefa.com
From the Dragonara Hotel in Leeds, Fred Dinenage presents the darts competition where professional players and celebrities join forces to compete against each other.
Players are Diane Keen, Alan Evans, John Lowe, Liz Frazer, Reg Bosenquet, Ran Smith, Nicky Virachkul and Charlie Williams, whose (effective) tactic seems to be wearing his opponents down with a relentless barrage of comedy banter.
The camera dramatically changed the ways we interact with sport.
Watching sports on the screen allows us access that would be impossible for the ordinary spectator, whether it’s running with footballers, floating above the clouds with skydivers or drifting so close to surfers we're getting splashed. Sports broadcasting brought these elite athletes into our homes. On-pitch dramas and post-match interviews transformed athletes from sporting heroes into celebrities, flogging everything from training tips to new fashions to crisps.
Nowadays there are screens in every stadium – enhancing the in-person experience and assisting the umpire. Wherever you are, you are in the best seat, enjoying extraordinary access to the energy, excitement and agility of sporting action.
