How easy is it to buy British products on the High Street in 1982?
Anglia Television reporter Christine Webber goes shopping around Norwich, Norfolk for British-made products to discover how easy it would be for the average consumer to follow the 'Think British' campaign. She looks at household electrical goods including toasters, irons, kettles and food mixers, then visits a Marks and Spencer clothing store and a garage shop selling car supplies. This video was made to be shown in a Round Robin feature on Anglia Television early evening news/ magazine programme, About Anglia.
In the 1980s the influential Confederation of British Industry (CBI) and companies including Marks and Spencer, Debenhams and British Airways had been encouraging UK consumers to 'Think British' when spending money. For the UK government this stance would be problematical under the EEC Treaty and would have other international trade implications.
Video filmed to be inserted during live broadcast of Anglia Television's early evening news / magazine programme, About Anglia. The live studio presentation provided context for the video as part of a news story or magazine feature within the programme. About Anglia was not recorded during broadcast, so it is usually just the pre-recorded programme inserts which survive.
In the 1980s Anglia Television was broadcasting to a wide area in the East of England including Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire, Essex, Norfolk, Northamptonshire, Suffolk and adjoining parts of Buckinghamshire, Hertfordshire, Leicestershire, Lincolnshire and Rutland where there was some overlap with neighbouring ITV regions.
