Cardiff's Sikh community celebrates its new place of worship in glorious colour.
It is September 1989, and a new purpose-built Sikh temple is opening in Tudor Street in the Riverside area of Cardiff - the Sri Dasmais Singh Sabha Gurdwara. There is much excitement and preparation for the procession to the new building and for the ceremony once there. The parade itself includes members of the Sikh community dancing, drumming and chanting, and involves the conveying of the Sikh holy scripture - the Granth - through the Cardiff streets. The parade travels along Kitchener Road, Leckwith, Cowbridge Road East and past the castle, in front of which there is ceremonial dancing, into St Mary Street and then Tudor Street.
Once inside the temple, the ceremony includes the carrying of the Granth upstairs to the altar, before the service with hymns and a sermon. Guests ar welcomed from afar, including from Scotland, the north of England and London, and dignitaries are present. There will follow a reading of the Granth for one day and night (five such readings in total).
Terry Dimmick from Chapter Video Workshop can be heard on the video directing some shots at intervals.
