Fears of rowdy people drinking late into the night had long limited the kicking out time of pubs in the city, but what happens on the outskirts when neighbouring pubs have different rules? Bayles visits Bakersfield to find out and attempts to explain the confusing anomalies of the system. The Great Midlands Pub Crawl

The Midlands - famed for its hostelries and home to many a brewing giant. The beer industry has been part of life here for hundreds of years: at its height, in the 19th Century, Burton-on-Trent alone boasted over 30 breweries and the town supplied a quarter of all the beer drunk in England. This collection takes us a little closer to the present day with a peek at the pub culture of the 1980s – how might it have felt to sit in a Midlands' pub 40 years ago? Though the physical structure of a public house is important, its atmosphere relies on the characters who drink there – in these films you will meet some of the individuals who make a pub special - a woman who has been drinking in the same bar for 76 years; a landlord who sings to his beer; a duck… The history is rich in these parts - from the masters of malt in Burton and Birmingham, to the top taverns of Nottingham and Mansfield, it’ll be a long time till last orders are called. Anyone fancy a pint?
