Crooning landlord keeps his beer in the best condition.

At the Cross Inn at Kinver in Staffordshire landlord Chris Vincent has an unusual way of ensuring his beer is in tip-top condition. As well as keeping the pipes clean Chris sings to his barrels of beer. Even seasoned reporter John Swallow, who traversed the length and breadth of the Midlands in search of this kind of '...and finally' story, is not convinced. But, if singing to plants can help them grow, then perhaps singing to barrels in a pub cellar is not so daft after all.

John Swallow meets the landlord of the Cross Inn at Kinver who sings to his beer in the pub cellar.

The Great Midlands Pub Crawl

An opportunity to explore the pub culture of of the Midlands without being tempted to damage your liver.
The Midlands - famed for its hostelries and home to many a brewing giant. The beer industry has been part of life here for hundreds of years: at its height, in the 19th Century, Burton-on-Trent alone boasted over 30 breweries and the town supplied a quarter of all the beer drunk in England. This collection takes us a little closer to the present day with a peek at the pub culture of the 1980s – how might it have felt to sit in a Midlands' pub 40 years ago? Though the physical structure of a public house is important, its atmosphere relies on the characters who drink there – in these films you will meet some of the individuals who make a pub special - a woman who has been drinking in the same bar for 76 years; a landlord who sings to his beer; a duck… The history is rich in these parts - from the masters of malt in Burton and Birmingham, to the top taverns of Nottingham and Mansfield, it’ll be a long time till last orders are called. Anyone fancy a pint?
