Witches' Brew [28/12/72]
Bewitching entertainment for children featuring eerie puppets.
Witch's Brew was an early afternoon children's programme produced by Yorkshire Television, hosted by Fiona Gaunt in character as the Witch, replete with green make-up and a truly unnerving cackle. Her den is populated by familiars and talking portraits, brought to life by puppeteer Roger Stevenson and voiced by impressionist Peter Goodwright. Gaunt goes all in with her character, so much so that younger viewers may find Witch's Brew a bit too scary!
The show is playful, irreverent and not afraid to be creepy. At regular intervals the Witch conjures up music performances from marionettes seen through her crystal ball. The song choices are all variety standards made spooky by the presence of puppets: a duck trills and bounces along to 'O'Rafferty's Motor Car' and a jazzy cat croons to 'Everybody Wants to Be a Cat'. Near the end the viewer is primed to expect a gentle fairytale, but actually the Witch is setting up an elaborate pun about talking beans - to the dismay of her puppet companions.
