Essex County Council bulk buys chips ahead of predicted price increase.
Bags of frozen chips equivalent to around four million portions have been purchased by Essex County Council to save the ratepayers' money ahead of predicted price rises resulting from a poor potato crop. They have also bought frying oil in readiness with an eye on the European surplus known as the 'olive oil lake'. The 40 container loads of chips will be stored ahead of distribution to the Council's 700 schools and 100 social services and residential homes as a staple part of their meals. In Chelmsford, Essex, county supplies officer Tony Bartholomew explains the £30,000 saving over scenes of dinner ladies and schoolchildren. The reporter was Surrey Beddows for this video made to be shown in a news story on Anglia Television early evening news / magazine programme About Anglia.
Video filmed to be inserted during live broadcast of Anglia Television's early evening news / magazine programme About Anglia. The live studio presentation provided context for the video as part of a news story or magazine feature within the programme. About Anglia was not recorded during broadcast, so it is usually just the pre-recorded programme inserts which survive. In the 1980s Anglia Television was broadcasting to a wide area in the East of England including Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire, Essex, Norfolk, Northamptonshire, Suffolk and adjoining parts of Buckinghamshire, Hertfordshire, Leicestershire, Lincolnshire and Rutland where there was some overlap with neighbouring ITV regions.
