Together with their sister archive in Yorkshire they form the Yorkshire and North East Film Archive, a unique pan-regional resource with over 75,000 moving image artefacts, part of York St John University. They unlock the collections for artists, academics, curators, programmers, researchers, and producers to reveal compelling stories from the vaults. www.yfanefa.com

Out with the old and in with the new; shop 'til you drop gets a makeover.

The creation of the Red Mall at the Gateshead Metro Centre marked the beginning of a new era, as the latest owners sought to phase out more of the quirky elements installed by the original designer, and create a minimalist retail space dedicated to pure purchasing power. Street games like Sir John Hall's giant chess sets had long-since been removed, but with the successful opening of the Red Mall the way was clear to remove the amusements of Metroland and fill its floorspace with more commercial rentals.

Made for Capital Shopping Centres, a film about their £85 million investment to develop and build the Red Mall and Public Transport Interchange at the Metro Centre in Gateshead. The film features a brief history of the Metro Centre, the launch ceremony with the Mayor of Gateshead and time-lapse images showing the early development of the site, as well as artistic impressions of what the new mall will look like and how it will improve the retail experience when it opens in autumn 2004.

The North East in Business

Bigger and better is the motto of the North East: businesses build to outstrip European rivals and sporting events are world-class.
After the loss of many crucial industries from the area in the 1980s, the North East began the slow but steady process of rebuilding. Heavy industry was replaced in part by tourism, and overseas manufacturers saw the benefits of operating in the region. However, not all of these developments were long-lived, and the struggle to replace traditional industries with entirely new sources of prosperity continues.
