Blockbusters [01/11/88]
Popular general knowledge quiz with sixth formers competing tactically against each other in an unusual two versus one format.
Blockbusters, based on an American quiz show with the same title, was a daily fixture on weekday afternoons. The format consisted of a grid of hexagons containing the first letters of the answers. Each side would select tactically, making their way across the board whilst attempting to halt their opponent’s progress. In a best of 3 match the winner would progress to a 60-second ‘gold run’ to win a prize. The quizmaster was Bob Holness whose calm, friendly manner put the contestants at ease. Evident in this particular show as Bob notices one of the contestants appears rather shy.
Ending a 10 year run on ITV in 1993 Blockbusters has reappeared in new versions with new hosts including Michael Aspel, Simon Mayo and Dara O’Briain.
