The first appearance of the contest challenging the intelligence, physical ability and perception of the contestants.

Unlike other quiz shows the Krypton Factor did not include any banter with the contestants and it was not wholly a contest of what you know. The show also included a physical element – an assault course – as well as tests of perception, memory and personality. This is a serious competition. Host, Gordon Burns, efficiently handles the proceedings; explaining some complex rounds and updates on the contestants’ accumulated scores, their Krypton Factor. A popular quiz but difficult for the viewer to play along with most rounds except for general knowledge and observation and perception. The observation and perception round in this programme is based on a clip from the film ‘A Bridge Too Far’ (1977) with questions on the scene and an identity parade featuring a supporting actor. Have a go!

In a review in The Observer (11/9/77) Clive James describes the Krypton Factor as ‘a sort of multi-lane brain-strain or combined mind-grind.
