MOMI Indian Cinema Interviews
In unedited interviews filmed in the 1990s for use by the Museum of the Moving Image, British Indians of different generations give their views on Indian cinema
In this unedited footage filmed in Leicester in the 1990s for use by the BFI's Museum of the Moving Image (MOMI), British Indians of different generations give their views on Indian cinema.
The interviews are filmed in front of a display of VHS tapes. The unnamed interviewer asks about the Indian film star Amitabh Bachchan. Young and old all agree that Bachchan is a role model. Several recall meeting him when he visited Leicester. An older man says his idol was Dilip Kumar, but that it's important to have new role models, so things move forward.
The interviews reveal splits in the appeal of Indian cinema even among the same generation. One young woman gets video tapes of Hindi films from local shops, but another young man says he doesn't watch as many Hindi films as he did when he was a child.
The interviewer asks how cinemagoing in the UK and India compare. A young woman describes the highly involved audience she witnessed in India. An older man recalls how in his youth in India, cinemagoing was an affordable activity for the poor and also an act of rebellion against disapproving parents.
Interviews conducted as part of an event with Amitabh Bacchan at MOMI: children and their parents are being interviewd about Amitabh Bacchan and more generally about Indian cinema, answering questions such as : "Why is Bacchan so successful? What makes Indian cinema so popular?"; the role of the movie star; watching Hindi movies in the UK.
