The Yorkshire Film Archive at York St John University save and celebrate screen heritage made in or about Yorkshire. They connect broad and diverse audiences to their cultural and socially significant collection that reflects the life, landscape, and identity of the people of the region since the 1890s. Together with their sister archive in the North East they form the Yorkshire and North East Film Archive, a unique pan-regional resource with over 75,000 moving image artefacts. They unlock the collections for artists, academics, curators, programmers, researchers, and producers to reveal compelling stories from the vaults. www.yfanefa.com

The Reel Alternative

An in-depth report on independent filmmaking in Yorkshire in the early 1980s.

Richard Woolley talks about independent filmmaking and talks to a local filmmaker. This programme includes clips from the films Jobs for the Girls, Memo, Johnny Yes No, and Arpeggio.

Features an interview with Paul Marris, chair of Yorkshire Arts Film Panel, and extracts from the films Pretend You'll Survive (Leeds Animation Workshop), Jobs for the Girls (Sheffield Film Cooperative), (Ann Foreman), Johnny Yes-No (Peter Care), and Arpeggio (York Independent Films).

Richard Woolley was at this time a filmmaker and critic, before moving into film education, setting up the Northern School of Film and Telev ision in 1990. In 2005 he was appointed the first professor of film and television at the University of York.
