With the continued decline of the shipbuilding industry on both the rivers Tyne and Wear, Briefing asks the question, is this the end of shipbuilding in the region? Includes both filmed items and studio discussion, and examination of the issues facing the industry stemming from the government's apparent reluctance to helping the industry in the face of foreign competition.

The once-thriving powerhouse of Northern industry was stripped back during the 1980s as the region lost coal mines, shipyards, steelworks and many more employers besides. The decline of the North East economy was particularly hard on school-leavers, who had fewer skills and no work experience to fall back on in an increasingly bleak jobs market.
