Kievan Frescoes choir performs at York's Catholic Church at the heart of the city.

Kievan Frescoes (Frescoes of Kyiv) was founded in 1989 by Oleksandr Bondarenko to promote Ukrainian sacred music. The choir's repertoire included music by composers M. Diletskoy, M. Berezovsky, D. Bortnyansky, M. Lysenko and M. Leontovych in its repertoire and also performed folk songs, Christmas and new year carols (kolyady and schedrivky) as well as choral works by contemporary composers.

In 1990, the choir made its first recording, Masterpieces of Ukrainian sacred music. In 1991, it added the Liturgy of St. John Chrysostom composed by K. Stetsenko to its repertoire, which they performed on Ukrainian television in an historic first, as liturgical choral music had been banned from broadcast under the Soviet system.

Later the same year, Frescoes of Kyiv completed a tour of England, including St Wilfrid's Church in York and performed at the International Competition of Choral Groups 'Chorale' in Sligo (Northern Ireland), winning the Grand Prix.

In 1992, the choir performed at the First All-World Forum of Ukrainians and at the opening of the Kyiv-Mohyla Academy in Kyiv. Further international tours followed in 1993 and 1994 (Belgium and Holland), 1997 (France and Italy) and 2005 (Japan) and released recordings in 1994, 1998 and 1999. Frescoes of Kyiv also performed in Ukraine, notably at the National Philharmonicin Kyiv in 2001 in hour of Pope John Paul II, at St Micheal's Cathedral in Kyiv in 2002 on the 120th anniversary of the birth of K. Stestenko.

This video documents a performance by the choral ensemble Kievan Frescoes at St Wilfrid's Church in York. The picture and sound have been mixed / edited from two camera angles, one at the front of the church and one from an elevated position at the back of the church. The language of the film is English, with singing in Ukrainian.

Culture, Customs, and Choirs

The UK's Ukrainian community celebrate art and tradition through song and dance.
During the Glasnost and Perestroika era of the late 1980s and early 1990s, the Ukrainian diaspora in the UK took advantage of a slightly more relaxed approach to international travel and invited cultural groups from Ukraine to visit the UK to perform. These visits sometimes corresponded with larger cultural festivals, such as the International Eisteddfod in Llangollen, Wales, or regional arts events such as the Bradford Festival. Prior to this, other diaspora arts groups had toured in Europe, North America and Canada, but it was very rare for groups from Ukraine to do the same. This period was a time of cultural revival and a hope that Ukrainian culture could be opened up for the world to share and enjoy. This collection is a selection of footage from different choir performances and Ukrainian cultural customs captured on video by the UVAS.
