Ukrainian Ensemble put on a majestic performance in Bradford's most ancient place of worship.

Boyan choir was founded in 1946 by conductor Volodymyr Panasyuk. Boyan was initially based at the House of Culture of Telecommunication Employers of Lviv Department 'Ukrtelecom', which actively supported its development. Many of Boyan's members were telecommunications workers, but the membership also included teachers, doctors, engineers, workers, students and military personnel, all united by a love of song.

The choir was led by Eugene Vakhnyak from 1947 to 1996 and conducted by Yarolav Baziy from 1964. Other conductors who have worked with the choir include Yaroslav Hnatovskyj and Oleh Tyshylyk. Vasyl Chuchman became choir leader in 2003. The current conductor is Adriana Chuchman and the accompanist is Solomiya Savruk. Boyan has toured internationally and has won prizes at International Choral Festival 'Tallinn-75' and at festivals in Ukraine, Switzerland, Greece, Spain and Germany.

In 1996, Boyan took part in the 400th Anniversary Celebrations for the Union of Brest in Rome. Boyan's current repertoire includes various Ukrainian and foreign composers, Christmas songs, liturgies and folk songs.

This is an excerpt of a concert in Bradford by the Revutsky Ukrainian Male Voice Choir Ensemble Boyan. Boyan appeared at Bradford Cathedral on 21 June, 1993. The video begins with a still of the UVAS logo on a loop, followed by stills of Boyan's marketing material. The concert was performed and filmed at Bradford Cathedral.

The choir are introduced by an unidentified man, possibly a representative of Bradford Cathedral, who introduces the choir as performing Orthodox choral music. There are some appearances from a solo female singer.

Culture, Customs, and Choirs

The UK's Ukrainian community celebrate art and tradition through song and dance.
During the Glasnost and Perestroika era of the late 1980s and early 1990s, the Ukrainian diaspora in the UK took advantage of a slightly more relaxed approach to international travel and invited cultural groups from Ukraine to visit the UK to perform. These visits sometimes corresponded with larger cultural festivals, such as the International Eisteddfod in Llangollen, Wales, or regional arts events such as the Bradford Festival. Prior to this, other diaspora arts groups had toured in Europe, North America and Canada, but it was very rare for groups from Ukraine to do the same. This period was a time of cultural revival and a hope that Ukrainian culture could be opened up for the world to share and enjoy. This collection is a selection of footage from different choir performances and Ukrainian cultural customs captured on video by the UVAS.
