Breathing new life into a dusty old workplace; the surprising future of a redundant mine.
Created from the former Rye Hill surface coal mine, Rainton Meadows nature reserve has become a significant area for wildlife in the relatively short time since it was established. Its varied habitats have encouraged visits from 200 recorded species of birds, and its neighbouring site, Joe's Pond, has been designated a Site of Special Scientific Interest. The common pochard (a vulnerable threatened species) winters alongside tufted ducks and great crested grebes.
The final edition in this series of the Tyne Tees Television wildlife programme Wild North, presented by Jonathan Morrell. In the first part of the programme a report from the North Pennines of the rare moorland bird the Ring ouzel followed by moth enthusiasts at Hamsterley Forest in County Durham.
In the second part of the programme begins with a report on the restoration of Rainton Meadows in County Durham from open-casting mine to nature reserve. The final report from Redcar on Lynn Appleby and her rapid-response hedgehog rescue service.
