Discover the fascinating true story behind Philip Wayre's Otter Trust which helped save British otters from extinction in the wild.

In the 1960s Philip Wayre was the only person in Britain breeding otters and releasing them into the wild. He even resorted to buying back otters from coypu trappers. At one point coypu trappers were setting 3,000 traps a night in Norfolk, and many of them caught otters by mistake. Coypu were eradicated in the wild in Britain, but otters are beginning to return.

An edition of the Tyne Tees Television wildlife programme Wild North, presented by Jonathan Morrell. In the first part of the programme, a report from Southeast Durham on a man who is carrying out a survey into mammals living along the verges of busy roads, followed by a report from Kielder Castle on toadstools and mushrooms growing there.

In the second part of the programme a report on the conservation work done by Philip Wayre, owner of the Otter Trust, and a new otter reserve being built on the River Greta near Bowes in County Durham. The final report on a man who is a fan of rapeseed and the wildlife living in it including the Sage Warbler who feeds and nests in the crop.

Wildlife & Nature in the North East

A cornucopia of wild delights in this series of nature programmes from the North East.
Made by filmmaker and agricultural journalist Charles Boden, these films sought to capture the best of wildlife projects in the region. However, they captured so much more, from a controversial visitor attraction that was later closed down by the authorities, to the birth of the first new osprey colony in England. This series is a time capsule of timeless things.
