Last chance to see the controversial nature reserve which fell 'fowl' of the authorities and was forced to close under a cloud.
After decades operating without a zoo licence, the Sanctuary Wildlife Centre was submitted to a nine-hour inspection by the RSPCA, Trading Standards, and the police. Several wild birds were seized under the advice of a specialist veterinary surgeon, and some had to be put to sleep. The centre was issued with a closure notice, which they took legal action against to defend their name. In 24 years they had welcomed over 100,000 visitors, and were a popular local attraction.
The first edition of the Tyne Tees Television wildlife programme Wild North, presented by Andrew Friend. The first report follows Guisborough-based photographer Graham Skinner who takes pictures of Adders on the North Yorkshire Moors. The second report, from Allen Banks Valley near Bardon Mill in Northumberland, looks at the illusive Field Mouse that thrives there. The next report is on a wildlife rescues centre near Morpeth, which specialise in the treatment of Tawny owls.
The next report looks at the Cormorant and anglers who are against these birds as they eat fish from ponds and reservoirs. The final report from Kielder Forest and research being carried out there on the fluctuation in numbers of short-tailed field voles.
Due to issues in the source video, there is a slight distortion in the image throughout the programme.
