"Up in the morning and out to school, mother says, they'll be no work next year". Billy Bragg provides the soundtrack for the difficult decisions for the Class of '87.
This is the first in a series of reports produced by Central News, which looks at the students of the 'Class of '87' preparing to leave Sinfin Community School in Derby. From a total of 2.7 million school leavers, it was expected that nearly half a million would not find jobs, training courses, or continue in education.
Far from the popular cliché of the 'Yuppie', and the wealth that was being generated in the City of London at the time, the pupils of 5N are considering their next steps, aware that the jobs that their parents' took for granted in Derby's factories are gone forever.
Phil Wardman previews a new series of features about a group of school leavers from Sinfin in Derby.
