Looking back on the long road to the Good Friday Agreement.
On the day before the Good Friday Agreement in 1998, as anticipation began to mount that a peace deal involving most of the political parties in Northern Ireland was within sight, this UTV package was broadcast, showing, through recent archive footage, the journey undertaken by those involved in the process throughout the 1980s and 1990s.
It remains today a concise and informative starting point for our collection of archive clips setting out the road to peace, from before the Downing Street Declaration in 1993 to the setting up of a new devolved government after the Good Friday Agreement in 1998.
Starting in 1993, UTV Live took over as Ulster Television's local news series, running a flagship programme each evening, with other bulletins throughout the day. In the 1990s it captured the unfolding story of the push towards a peace settlement in Northern Ireland, through all its twist and turns, which ended with the historic Good Friday Agreement in 1998.
