Visit the area of Monea in County Fermanagh and explore the history and people.
Lesser Spotted Ulster is an ongoing series exploring the stories, people and geography of less-visited areas of Ulster, presented by Joe Mahon. In this episode, Joe visits Monea in county Fermanagh. Monea, the village and townland, is near Enniskillen. Here we find Monea Castle, built in 1618, and the parish of Devenish, home of St Feadhbar.
This is an area of religious importance, reflected in the artwork of the buildings and traditions of arts and crafts in the area. Local historian George Elliott tells Joe about the castle and its occupants. Sculptor Michael Hoy, a master Mason, creates beautiful pieces and talks about his craft. St Michael's Church in Enniskillen is full of Michael's work. Joe tells the fascinating story of the Monea Schism of the 19th century. Conservationist Geraldine Maguire explains the history of the two churches in the area.
Lesser Spotted Ulster is a long-running and popular programme that visits the places many of us have heard of but never been to. Presenter Joe Mahon gently explores what makes a place what it is.
