207. Slow TV: Narrowboat Cruising along the Macclesfield Canal

A relaxing, real-time recording from the bow of David Johns’ narrowboat as it cruises along Macclesfield Canal on a sunny late-summer day.

David Johns went to live on a narrowboat in 2015 after quitting his job and selling his house. He started his YouTube channel CruisingTheCut to document his travels, with it naturally evolving into a showcase of canal life.

This video is an example of Slow TV, a form of ‘marathon’ television coverage made popular in Norway when a full 7-hour train ride along the Bergen Line was aired on the NRK in 2009. This video shows the POV from the bow of Johns’ narrowboat as he cruises from Hall Green in Staffordshire to just outside Congleton in Cheshire on a beautiful sunny day in September 2019. It evokes a sense of calm and tranquillity and invites those watching to slow down and unwind.

Created by Youtube channel Cruising The Cut and released during the third national lockdown due to the Coronavirus pandemic when Slow Television, especially examples that showed nature and rural scenes, were popular with those isolating. The journey starts, on a nice sunny day, at Hall Green stop lock and continues through Congleton, to near Bridge 65.

Encompassing much that’s new, from ASMR and Unboxing Videos to Twitch streaming and TikTok twerking, it’s also breathed new life into older film forms, filling our screens with fresh takes on advertising, journalism, satire, public information, campaigning, training and much else that’s been with us since time immemorial, and variously taking the forms of comedy, drama, documentary and animation. It’s become embedded into every aspect of UK (and world) society.

This unique collection of 50 online videos combines iconic highlights of British online video with other examples chosen to illustrate that sheer diversity. All were acquired by the BFI National Archive as part of the Lottery funded Our Screen Heritage programme. Our thanks to the Lottery, and lottery ticket buyers nationwide. for their support of this vital collecting and preservation work.
