Charlie Bit My Finger - Again!
A spontaneous family moment between two brothers became one of YouTube’s earliest global viral hits, capturing the platform’s emerging culture of everyday shared video.
Uploaded to YouTube in 2007, Charlie Bit My Finger began as a private home video filmed by the boys’ father, Howard Davies‑Carr, and shared only so their godfather in the United States could see it. Because the file was too large to email, Howard uploaded the clip to YouTube and set it to private, never expecting it to be viewed by anyone beyond close friends and family.
As more relatives asked to view the footage, the family switched the video to public for convenience - a small decision that allowed it to travel far beyond its intended circle.
In the largely experimental early days of YouTube, this unscripted moment quickly captured global attention. Its natural, domestic immediacy made it into one of the platform’s earliest viral hits, and by 2009 it had become YouTube’s most‑viewed video, marking a pivotal moment in the rise of user‑generated content. As of 2026, it has close to 900 million views.
The clip’s significance persisted long after its initial spread: in 2021, the video was sold as an NFT (non-fungible token) for $760,999, adding an unexpected digital‑era epilogue to its story. What began as a simple family snapshot, never intended for public view, became a defining example of how private moments shared online can take on an extraordinary cultural afterlife.
In this short home video two brothers from England, 3-year-old Harry Davies-Carr and 1-year-old Charlie Davies-Carr are sat together in a chair, Charlie playfully nibbles on Harry’s finger, much to both of their amusement. Harry exclaims, “Charlie bit me,” before placing his finger back in Charlie's mouth, who then bites down with more intent. Despite Harry’s growing protests, Charlie holds on until Harry finally pulls his finger away, just as he begins to scream. Harry scolds his brother, but Charlie giggles in response. Harry soon smiles too whilst still acknowledging the pain in his finger.
