A deep breath for Fred 'Elephant Lungs' Burton, but surely there are easier ways to inflate a balloon?

In 1987 the former football star Jimmy Greaves moved out from behind the sports desk to host his own chat show in which, according to the promotional blurb, he met 'ordinary people with extraordinary stories'.

For the first series, Jimmy's studio chats were mixed with film reports from Central's specialist in the lighter news item, John Swallow. In this instance Swallow travels to Cheadle in Staffordshire to meet Fred Burton, who is known for his 'elephant-sized' lungs (quite why you'd want to do the sort of things that Fred specialises in is really beyond us, and please don't try this at home).

As a warm-up Fred demonstrates how long he can blow on a hunting horn, but the main event is Burton's long-winded attempt to inflate an 11-foot Met Office weather balloon. We don't want to give too much away, but be prepared to be deflated...

Going the Extra Mile: Midlands Records and Stunts

A celebration of the strength, stamina and sheer bloody-mindedness of some exceptional Midlanders.
They may look like you and me, but don't be fooled - these are the people who push themselves in ways that are beyond us, mentally as well as physically. We might consider their feats of endurance (and often discomfort) foolhardy and even, perhaps, worth a giggle. But without them the world would be a far duller place. Their stunts prove that more is possible, whether the aim is to go faster or further, to last longer, or to simply to do something daft. So, whether it's press-ups or pole squatting, a bean-eating marathon - or simply a marathon - this is the place for you to enjoy the exploits of outstanding Midlanders. And you don't even have to break into a sweat (although some of the stunts may make you wince)!
