The true scale of what's at stake in the long-running strike becomes clear.

In September 1984, some six months into the Miners' Strike, it was becoming clear that the conflict had seismic implications for Britain. This edition of LWT's flagship current affairs series, Weekend World steps back from close reporting of the progress of the strike to ask "just how important the Miners' Strike is for the country?"
Presented as usual by Brian Walden, programme begins with a sober and thorough run through the background to the strike, focusing largely on the economic context, including changes in the international coal market in recent decades. It tries hard to be even-handed, presenting a relatively complex picture of the motivations of both government and trade unions compared to most mainstream media commentary at the time, and acknowledging the huge cost of defeat for whichever side emerged the loser.
The programme's depiction of the strike as a battle between socialism and capitalism might accurately reflect the positions of the opposing leaders, Arthur Scargill, leader of the National Union of Mineworkers, and prime minister Thatcher, but it's less certain that it reflects the motivation of most of the striking miners who, whatever their politics, were probably more concerned with holding on to their jobs.
But it's hard to argue with the programme's broad argument, that the strike has come to represent a battle about the kind of country Britain will become, or with its prediction that victory for the prime minister would "speed up the process of Thatcherisation".

Programme investigating the possible long term effects of the strike on
the British economy and examining what is at stake for both sides in the
dispute.
