Established in 1977, the North West Film Archive preserves moving images made in or about the North West of England for the education and enjoyment of the region’s people. Part of Manchester Metropolitan University Library’s Cultural Collections, and based within Manchester Central Library’s Archives+ partnership, we are a specialist resource dedicated to saving and growing our region’s rich filmed history.

Salesbury Hall in Ribchester hosts a Gang Show in this beautifully shot colour film from Lancashire, as local scouts and guides mark the Girl Guides' Diamond Jubilee of 1970 with an afternoon of fun and music for a group of disabled visitors. The enthusiastic cast give their all for an appreciative audience, before the arrival of well-deserved refreshments for performers and spectators alike.
Filmmaker Mary Corner was headmistress of Howard St. Nursery School in Burnley for many years. She was also a highly skilled member of Burnley Cine Club, and her films record not only the early education of children in her care, but community and topical events both locally and further afield.

Many established music artists have been at the helm of sonic exploration, redefining genres and challenging the familiar ways in which sound can be experienced. But shifting the perspective away from multi-platinum pop stars and established performers, this collection is a celebration of the hobbyists, the amateur & the unrefined love of an art form that builds communities and allows for complete self expression
