Handheld footage of the crowds and bands at the 1975 E1 Festival in Stepney.
The E1 Festival was a community run event that took place throughout the 1970s on vacant land in the East End of London. Originally set up to raise money for the Junior Football League, the Festival in Stepney was a weekend long event of music, performing arts, stalls, and activities for people of all ages. In this handheld video from the 1975 E1 Festival, the Basement Project gives us on-the-ground snapshots of the day's activities. We see young people styling their quiffs to the strains of a rock & roll band, and jiving on an improvised dance floor. Aerial shots show the large crowds enjoying the music, the tents and stalls, and a huge inflatable play area for the kids. The video finishes with a steel and brass band playing upbeat tunes, including a Nigerian folk song.
