Hilda and Stan enjoy their second honeymoon in the laps of luxury.

Winning third prize in the Loving Cup's Happy Marriage competition, Hilda and Stan set off for their second honeymoon. With a night in the bridal suite of a five-star hotel and £25 spending money, the Ogdens get a chance to be snooty and live "that better life that we've never had"".

Discarding her trademark hair curlers and pinny for a high-end outfit and night dress, Hilda immerses herself in a life of pampering and luxury. Stan, on the other hand, is more concerned with who is missing him at the Rovers and whether he'll be able to get a proper pint instead of champagne. Whisked away from the humdrum of number 13 on Coronation Street to the extravagances of hotel room 504, the Ogdens combat the stark differences between living life and enjoying it.

Leslie Duxbury's writing is embellished by the performances of Jean Alexander and Bernard Youens, who bring the complexities of social class and privilege to the fore.

Stan and Hilda Ogden arrive at a posh hotel for their second honeymoon competition prize.

Coronation Street: The 60s and 70s!

Where it all began…!
A terraced street filled with characters loved by generations; Coronation Street is the longest running television soap opera in the world. Created in 1960 by Tony Warren, Coronation Street is set in fictional Manchester town Weatherfield and follows the dramatic lives of those living on the street and its local area. This collection features episodes from the 1960s and 1970s. A long list of now iconic characters started in the soap’s earliest years. From landlady Annie Walker and her long-suffering husband Jack, to Elsie Tanner’s clashes with battle-axe busybody Ena Sharples. The loveable comedy couple of Hilda and Stan Ogden would become a template for years to come. The 1970s saw episodes in colour and the arrival of long-standing favourites Bet Lynch, Rita Littlewood, Deidre Hunt, Gail Potter and resident baddie Mike Baldwin. The first episode in 1960 introduced ‘Angry Young Man’ Kenneth Barlow who just wanted to escape the suffocating speculation behind twitching curtains. Who knew he’d still be sitting in The Rovers Return pub over 60 years later!!
