Christmas in the Street
Festive flashbacks from Corrie's early years.
This special episode of Coronation Street from 1968 is a compilation of clips from festive episodes over the previous eight years. It follows Rovers Return landlady Annie Walker and her husband Jack tidying the pub during the festive season. Their memories of past Christmas years act as an introduction to each extract. Clips ranged from sharp-tongued matriarch Ena Sharples (Violet Carson) holding court from her hospital bed to the numerous amateur dramatics society Christmas shows with dramas both on and off stage. A pantomime of Cinderella staged for schoolchildren is a particular highlight. Featuring many memorable cast members, including Anne Reid (Val Barlow), Arthur Lowe (Mr Swindley) and Pat Phoenix (Elsie Tanner), this is a walk down a cobbled memory lane.
Created in 1960 by Tony Warren, Coronation Street is the longest-running television soap opera in the world. Set in Weatherfield, a fictional town in Greater Manchester, the soap follows the dramatic lives of those living on Coronation Street and its immediate area.
Please note that the start of the programme contains one instance of outdated language to describe race (approx. 2:00 – 3:00).
