A Nottinghamshire spiritualist church faces an uncertain future on this astral plane.

The Pinewoods spiritualist church was built shortly after the end of the Second World War, in the grounds of a bungalow owned by Isa Northage, at Newstead in Nottinghamshire. Some of Mrs Newstead's 'remarkable powers' are remembered here by church trustees. She had little trouble filling the church with artefacts, thanks to her useful ability to conjure up items described as gifts from people from 'the other side'.

There was also the added attraction of healing surgery, which was performed courtesy of a Dr Reynolds, a robed surgeon that Mrs Northage brought in from beyond the grave to act as her spiritual guide. However, Mrs Northage's death in 1985 caused the church to experience financial difficulties, a sudden end to the mystical happenings, and as Malcolm Brabant finds out, a family dispute over its future, which could probably only be sorted out by a timely reappearance of the mysterious Mrs Northage in this spiritual plane.

And of course there's the added bonus of hearing these stories directly from the people affected - their first-hand accounts making a compelling case for the supernatural. Why the Midlands though? Well, one of the UK's most popular places for UFO sightings is Stoke-on-Trent, so it appears the Midlands are very much on the minds of alien beings up there, somewhere...
