Olive and Mabel. Episode 1 - The Dog's Breakfast Grand Final

A light-hearted competition between furry chums as they take part in an al fresco chow down.

During the Covid lockdowns, BBC sports commentator Andrew Cotter entertained those trapped at home with a series featuring the antics of his two labradors, Olive and Mabel. What made his dog videos so much more popular than the many others was his application of his professional skills, commentating the interactions of his canine companions with a wry humour that imbued them with a human element.

Cotter’s calm Scottish burr, usually heard describing a golf tournament, here presents the dogs’ mealtime as competitive sport, detailing every aspect of the sprint to clean their bowls. Youngster Olive steals the title from Mabel at the end of an exciting two-dog race, with Cotter speculating that Mabel’s excessive tail wagging may have affected her performance. In a reference to the tradition of footballers swapping shirts at the end of a match, Cotter notes that the dogs inspect each other’s bowls at close of play.
