Fisherman and Boat at Port Said
Victorian-era quayside scenes filmed in northern Egypt
Visually attractive Victorian-era quayside scenes at the Egyptian port. Following a fourteen-part Tour of Spain and Portugal that he shot for R.W. Paul in 1896, Henry Short went to Egypt for this 1897 follow-up series. He's known to have made ten films there, of which few are known to survive. Port Said, at the northern end of the Suez Canal played a crucial role in British trade and, increasingly, tourism.
No titles. Static shot. View along a wooden quayside, to the right of the
quay, three Arabs in a row boat sort out their fishing nets and throw the
caught fish onto the quayside. Another Arab on the quayside helps them. In the
background is another row boat and a large sailing ship.
