Trip on the River Medway

Join this party of senior citizen day-trippers for a lazy glide along Kent's famous River Medway - in this short film from the 1960s

Sonny Hanson's colourful film begins with a party of mainly elderly men and women joining a boat for a trip along Kent's River Medway. Departing from Maidstone, we see the Archbishop's Palace before gliding under the town's main bridge, passing a riverside containing both residential and industrial buildings. At East Farleigh lock, the party stretches their legs before heading towards Telston Bridge and another lock. Then we head back home to Maidstone.

Ashford resident John Hanson Richardson, otherwise known as 'Sonny', began making his entertaining and technically sophisticated amateur films from the mid-1930s onwards - either independently or as a member of the Ashford Association Film Society. In addition to his enthusiasm for film making, Hanson was also a member of the Ashford Motor Club, a model railway engineer and a member of the Voluntary Fire Brigade.
